Using Hedging Plants For A Useful, Natural Hedge

Erecting good quality fencing to mark the boundaries around your home is commonly a big expense, particularly if you have a large area.

For a far more economical and natural alternative you ought to consider evergreen hedging plants. These hedging plants, once they are established are extremely effective for providing a windbreak, privacy, or security for your home. They can also be used to hide unsightly areas that you do not wish to overlook from your home or garden, such as roads, and ugly buildings.

Plants can provide far more curb appeal to your property than a fence.

There are lots of different plants you can choose to form a hedge on your property. You will get the best results possible by selecting plants that are well suited to the local weather conditions in your area. Prior to choosing the right plants for your land you will need to establish the soil type you are working with.

Among the most popular evergreen plants are various types of yew,, privet, boxwood, laurel and photinia.

The yew is a tree that is native to Britain which clips well and is typically used to form a classic boxed hedge. The yew can be grown almost anywhere which has good soil drainage.

One of the toughest shrubs is the privet. This plant can cope well in even the poorest quality soil and is a rapid grower. The addition of nutrients to poor quality soil will give your plants a good start as good ground preparation pays off.

Boxwood produces pretty little\attractive blooms during the spring and is the best choice for shady areas. It is a hardy plant which continues to grow for a number of years. Boxwood however grows rather slowly compared to other plants.

Laurel is a popular choice if you are aiming to provide a fantastic windbreak as it is a large leafedplant that can grow as high as fifteen feet.

Photinia appeals to many with deep red leaves turning green at the end of the spring season.

Smaller shrubs are a great low budget choice, but it then takes some time for your plants to become established and create an effective screen. An almost immediate hedge can be produced using large shrubs.

In order to keep costs to a minimum, you can plant your hedge plants yourself rather than have a professional do the job for you. It is quite a straightforward task to undertake, although it is time consuming and you will need to have enough strength to dig an adequate sized trench for planting. You need to prepare your ground well and water your new plants frequently to start with, to avoid losing any of your new shrubs.

For an attractive, natural look you could plant a selection of different hedging plants together. Hedging plants are an appealing economical alternative to fencing.
