I purchased this edge trimmer after my old one broke. I had been using a Ryobi string trimmer with the edger attachment.
It chews up the grass and gets clogged up quickly inside the blade cover. The thing is sort of cheap looking especially the wheels.
The wheels are on one side, the blade on the other. Therefore, it won’t work close to obstacles since you can’t reverse direction. Work on grass when it’s dry. It has an edge guide that’s somewhat useless since it doesn’t go down very much past the base of the wheels. He has been able to edge the decorative edge too. Our yard looks great and I am so happy with this purchase. Twenty years later I was a homeowner, edging my own lawn with a manual (push and grunt) edger that worked as well as the spade and bayonet, but with less time and effort from me. Ten years after that, I graduated to a string trimmer, and was able to groom my lawn with much less effort, although much more dirt and noise. This is a good tool for the home gardener. Powerful enough to do a typical edge along a sidewalk.
I have Zoysia grass which has not been edged for over 15 years. The Boss Edger cut right through it (in some places had to make a couple of passes but nonetheless it cut right through it) and made a tough task easier than I expected. The weed eating device just didn’t make it look right. My neighbor came over with his B&W edger one day and demonstrated it and I was sold on an edger.
I think that people who buy this product will find that it is good value for the money. I got tired of buying gas edgers and having them break down. Note to new edgers: Watch for rocks – if the blade sparks, you may be hitting a rock. I just went back through after reading reviews here on amazon of other users and felt inspired to try it again. It’s solidly constructed and it’s obvious that B&D paid a lot of attention to both ergonomics and safety. It’s well balanced, has an adjustable handle, and sports a heavy-duty electrical connection that includes a cord minder and an oversized, umbrella-like plug. I purchased this edger to replaced one like it that I used successfully for several years. It was light weight and easy to use with good results.
Move it forward two feet, back one foot–nice cut. Moving it forward and back gives you a clear sight on what it’s doing and the results are fine. I had to switch the handle to the other side and stand to the right of it so I could see–which I think the instructions probably told me, but I forgot. Once I got going, it was great.
