Consider starting your plants in pots and then planting the seedlings in your garden. They are then more likely to survive and to become thriving, mature plants. This also helps tighten time between plantings. Once you’ve removed the previous group of plants, your seedlings can go into the ground.
Putting plant materials in large plastic bags, preferably garbage bags, is a simple way to stock these materials for a compost pile. You can do this during the Autumn months directly after raking leaves. Store the bagged leaves in a warm place. Come spring time, you will be ready to compost the leaves, which creates ready-made soil.
Pest control can become a major issue. Don’t spray any harsh chemicals on your vegetables because you will be eating them later on. Instead of resorting to these harmful chemicals, you can keep garden pests at bay simply by paying close attention. If you catch the pests early, the best removal technique is just to take them off your plants by hand.
To keep pests away, you can use plants in the garden or other natural materials. Slugs can be kept at bay with a patch of marigolds or pungent vegetables. Insects also avoid shrubs and trees that are mulched with wood ash. These are proven methods without having to use harsh chemical pesticides.
To keep your plants from getting shocked, you need to gradually introduce them to changes in temperature and conditions. You need to give them about an hour of sunlight during the first day. As time goes by, slowly increase the time they spent outdoors. By the week’s end, your plants should then be ready for the big move!
When planting seeds, make sure to take your time. The first thing you should do is moisturize the soil. Then distribute the seeds so that they are evenly spaced and have sufficient room to grow. The seeds should be buried to a depth that is equal to three times the diameter of the seeds. Be aware that some seeds need light to germinate and should be sown on top of the soil.
Learn the proper way to handle chemicals, and the right way to use garden tools. If you fail to do this, you could cause yourself all sorts of injuries, the most common of which is irritated skin. Protect your plants and yourself by knowing how to correctly use all of your gardening implements.
Use root cuttings to create new plants. Cut the plant roots during winter, while they go dormant. Use a sharp gardening knife to cut the longest and thickest roots off of the plant. The roots should be sliced at least two inches long. Place these cuttings on the surface of a seed tray that you have filled with grit and peat moss and water thoroughly. Cover up the roots with a thinner layer of the peat mixture. Place your seed tray in a cool location and new seedlings will appear in about a month’s time. Place them in individual pots where they can sit until it is time to plant them outdoors.
Don’t cut your grass too short! When the grass is a little longer, the roots will be stronger and the lawn becomes more resistant. If you have short grass, you will have short roots and you will dry out your grass.
