Your best friend and her husband just purchased their first house, or perhaps your niece, brother or other family member. You naturally want to share in this time of excitement and celebration, and at the same time, contribute in some way to make the move less stressful. What can you do?
The options are practically endless! If children are involved, consider offering your services as a babysitter for a few days or take the kids to the park or a movie to give the parents a few hours of constructive time. Walk the dog or even take the family pet home with you so he will be out of harm’s way.
Preparing meals for the family is an excellent choice for showing your support at this time. If gourmet meal preparation is not one of your talents, consider a gift card to a local restaurant. Or surprise them with pizza and soda after a long day of unpacking. Pick up laundry at the cleaners, make a quick run to the grocers or offer to chauffeur the kids to school or band practice.
However, it’s not always possible to help out in a hands-on manner. Perhaps the family is several hundred miles away or your work schedule does not allow you to get physically involved in the move. Then what? Flowers, flowers, and flowers! The gift that is always loved! Consider a freshly cut bouquet of favorite flowers or a woody purple violet to sit primly on the windowsill. A beautiful green plant to fill a corner of the new home or to hang above the bathtub is another possibility.
Tart and smooth cheeses, summer sausage and crackers in a beautiful gift basket would delight the family. Or a charming basket filled to the brim with cookies, muffins, jams and tea would be so special to give. The basket options are unimaginable … the difficulty will be choosing which one!
However you choose to express your delight with their new home is sure to be appreciated. Whether your gift is one of errands and packing or sending flowers or treats, the family will be delighted with your thoughtfulness.
