Danger lurks in the flower bed – Hannibal, MO – Hannibal Courier-Post
Monday evening, while puttering around in my flower garden, I took a step toward a weed in order to reach down and pull it. My foot slid on the newly watered soil and in slow motion I performed somewhat of a split – although I was never able to perform that maneuver before. Sore yet physically able to get up out of that predicament, I decided to replace my gardening “clogs” with a more structured shoe, which could help prevent such mishaps in the future. True to my promise to myself, I wore a more structured shoe when I went out to the garden Tuesday evening. A friend gave me a start of her old-fashioned columbine. I know this is not the time to try such a tricky transplant, but the plant was available, so I accepted the challenge. I dug a healthy-size hole in the ground, put the roots below ground level, and carefully crumbled soil around the plant to fill up the hole. Finally, I poured a gallon of fertilizer/water around the plant. The next challenge was to replant the hosta I moved to make way for the columbine. during this process, I stepped backwards, and went ankle deep into the muddy columbine hole. My husband washed my “structured” shoes for me, and a quick check this morning showed that the columbine thus far thriving in its new spot. and I’m no worse for the wear and tear. some people get injured jogging or lifting weights. I’m just trying to stay on my feet in my flower bed!
