In theory, this is great. I, however, have very rocky soil and it’s difficult to get through when edging around my flower beds. This is a really great lawn edger. I had been looking for a replacement for my old edger that finally quit working. Be prepared however, the first time you use is will be the most difficult. After using it for the first time this past weekend, I found that the grass along the side of my driveway had grown over about 2 to 3 inches in most spots. The secondary handle and the adjustable edge guide are quite helpful. I never felt like this edger had taken control and gone where I didn’t want it to go. I would imagine this will wear on the blade quite a bit over time and bothers me but that is the only complaint I have. The power of the unit is good for an electric one in my opinion.
It took one time to get the hang of it. A gas one would be more convenient, but for price I am ok with it. My only concern is how well it will hold up over time. I had another Black and Decker product (a hedge cutter) and it was flimsy.
This edger is a major time and muscle saver over the manual ones I’ve used, such as the Rittenhouse edging and trenching tool (ASIN: B0002ZQGZQ). I still use the manual Rittenhouse to start new edging projects, but this electric edger is a dream come true for ongoing maintenance.
I contacted the shipper who directed me to Black and Decker who referred me to the agent in New Orleans who advised me to bring the edger in for repair. New Orleans is at least 75 miles from my home and it will be a pain in the neck for me to get there.
It is easy to use and works very well. I use it on a small lawn but due to the electric cord attached to it I don’t think it would be appropriate for a large lawn. It should really be larger. Once assembled, I was worried I would ruin my lawn as one commenter had lamented. It wasn’t very loud either. I will have to purchase a longer extension cord since I had to use two of them to reach all the areas we needed to edge.
Assembling this unit was a breeze. I like it so far what I have seen. I bought this edger the spring of last year– and I’m so glad I did. Before getting the edger, I’d been trying to edge with a weed eater– that’s like cutting a stick of butter with a wooden condiment spoon.
The trencher feature on the Edge Hog merely cuts an edge rather than a wider cut I wanted for the beds to keep the grass from encroaching. It’s made for someone about 5’10″ max.
Or I could mail it to the service center at my expense. wilkinson sword garden tools.
